Litany for One Who is Coming Out to Family
A pastor friend contacted us asking for prayer resources because a member of his congregation will be coming out to their conservative family soon and were deeply worried about their reaction. Here's what I wrote in response. Hopefully it can be useful for others in ministry.
For the person coming out
Gracious one, receive our prayers for <NAME> as they prepare to share truth with their family.
That they have courage to face what is currently unknown.
God in whose image we are formed, hear us.
That they take strength from the assurance of their belovedness.
God in whose image we are formed, hear us.
That they grow in love through what is unfolding.
God in whose image we are formed, hear us.
That they be equipped with words of truth and clarity.
God in whose image we are formed, hear us.
That they be compassionate but resolute.
God in whose image we are formed, hear us.
That they take comfort in realizing they're an example of God’s ongoing incarnation in the lives of their family.
God in whose image we are formed, hear us.
For family members
Comforter of souls, receive our prayers for <NAME>’s family.
That they trust in the reality that You are love.
God of unity and peace, hear us.
That they hunger for understanding.
God of unity and peace, hear us.
That they be open to the Spirit’s revelation.
God of unity and peace, hear us.
That their confusion be tempered.
God of unity and peace, hear us.
That their tongues be controlled.
God of unity and peace, hear us.
That any period of relationship disruption be limited.
God of unity and peace, hear us.
That sibling relationships be protected.
God of unity and peace, hear us.
That those who are not able to understand be comforted.
God of unity and peace, hear us.
For the Kindom
Eternal One, receive our prayers for the ongoing transformation of the world.
That there be an expansion of truth, light, and love resulting from <NAME>’s courage.
God of unfolding glory, hear us.
That the fruit of their authenticity and ours be multiplied.
God of unfolding glory, hear us.
That hearts be healed, and new relationships formed.
God of unfolding glory, hear us.
That you show us our role in furthering the arc of justice.
God of unfolding glory, hear us.
That this community be strengthened and equipped to support <NAME> and all those who desire freedom, authenticity, and truth.
